Epson’s Net-Zero Target Approved by the SBTi
Epson’s Net-Zero Target Approved by the SBTi
Epson aims to reduce GHG emissions across its value chain by over 50% by 2030 and achieve net-zero by 2050.
Global technology leader Epson has announced the approval of its net-zero target and interim goals by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This endorsement aligns Epson's plans with the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement, marking a significant step in the company's commitment to decarbonisation.
Epson Europe President, Inaho Takanori, stated: “In 2018, we became one of the first technology companies to have our climate targets approved by the SBTi, a bold move at that time. Since then, we have increased our ambition, aligning our targets with the 1.5°C pathway and achieving them ahead of schedule, largely due to our transition to 100% renewable electricity.”
He added, “We are now setting our sights even higher. Our new climate targets have received official approval from the SBTi, confirming that our strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is both scientifically grounded and aligned with limiting global warming.”
By 2030, Epson aims to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions (scope 1, 2, and 3) by 55%, with a long-term target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This commitment extends across the entire value chain, necessitating a comprehensive rethink of product design and collaboration with suppliers to minimise environmental impact.
Epson's long-term strategy, articulated in its "Environmental Vision 2050," focuses on reducing the environmental footprint of its products and operations. The updated targets submitted to the SBTi reflect public demand for absolute reductions in GHG emissions, ensuring consistency with Epson's broader environmental objectives.
Approved Targets
(All reductions compared to the baseline year of fiscal 2017)
Near-term targets:
- Reduce total scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 55% by 2030.
- Reduce total scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% by 2030.
Long-term targets:
- Reduce total scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 90% by 2050.
- Achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
The net-zero target is based on the SBTi Net-Zero Standard, prioritising direct reductions in all scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Residual emissions that cannot be eliminated will be neutralised through permanent carbon removal or storage.
To address the approximately 90% of emissions arising from its value chain, Epson is enhancing collaboration with suppliers through its "Epson Green Supply Chain" programme. This initiative improves the accuracy of GHG emissions data collected and explores joint procurement of renewable electricity.
Additionally, Epson is developing CO2 absorption technology as part of its environmental initiatives. Beyond its science-based targets, Epson aspires to contribute to societal decarbonisation by aiming to become carbon negative.
