Business inkjet printers: it’s time for IT managers to wake up and smell the coffee
New data has highlighted how simply switching from one type of printer technology to a modern alternative could unlock invaluable resources within the corporate sector. A simple move away from laser printing to Epson business inkjet technology has the potential to save European corporations over 1 billion Kwh in energy consumption, cut costs by €134 million and reduce CO 2emissions by 409 million KGs each year [1].
2020 is set to be a pivotal year for many businesses across Europe with green legislative requirements increasing and activist groups demanding more effort be made to reduce climate impact. In context, the annual total CO 2savings that could be achieved if all European businesses switched to Epson business inkjet technology, are equal to the volume 18 million trees can absorb in a year [2].
In Kwh, the potential saving could be redeployed to power a fleet of 1.2 million electric cars for a year and in monetary terms it could mean employers across Europe could fund an extra 36 million cups of quality coffee for their colleagues [3].
In the last four years, Epson business inkjet printers have secured a 56 per cent market share increase, positioning Epson with 29 per cent total market share across Western Europe, according to IDC data [4].
If this momentum continues, further environmental factors could be addressed, with corporate environments able to reduce print related waste; a factor that is helping drive increased uptake of the technology.
Phil Sargeant of IDC, the market intelligence firm, says: “Over recent years we have seen the rise of the business inkjet, from manufacturers such as Epson, and HP, and to a lesser extent, Canon, and Brother. The penetration for inkjets is increasing almost two percent a year.” Inkjets, he adds, have become a solidly mainstream choice. “Now one in three devices being sold into an office environment is a business inkjet. If you look at some markets in Europe, the penetration is as high as 40%.”
According to IT managers recently surveyed by Epson, the need to invest in new technology (58 per cent), reducing costs (51 per cent) and investing in new talent (42 per cent) were cited as the top three business pressures placed on organisations in the past two years [5]. While 38 per cent stated they were under considerable pressure to improve CSR performance, tight budget restrictions have left 37 per cent unable to employ new staff.
“Progressive innovation achieved over the last decade means that switching from legacy laser technology to Epson business inkjet is proven to save money and reduce environmental impact, but it also allows for focus on more important areas of business or function,” says Darren Phelps, VP of business, Epson Europe. “Making a small change to an often-overlooked piece of equipment could have substantial ecological and economic results, advantages enabled by our heat-free printing technology.
“A simple switch in technology can have significant human benefits,” says Phelps. “In corporations, resulting savings generated from our innovations are being used to enhance employee and customer experiences, help drive sales and enable new, smarter ways of working.”
